I just bought PocketPC Windows Mobile 5.0 and it came with 4.1 and I recieved
an error message "Critical Communications services failed to start. Try to
resetting the mobile device, and then connect again." on a WinXP pro laptop.
At one point it was working then the same error as above appear. I then
uninstall 4.1 and installed the 4.2 version after finding out on the site.
Same error appear. So I checked out the activesync site about configuration
to open up port 990, 999, 5678, 5679, 5721 and 26675. Plus I allow the
programs such as Wcesmgr.exe, Wcescomm.exe, Rapimgr.exe and CEAPPMGR.exe to
pass through my firewall. And still its giving the same error, so I want to
know what am I denying or missing?

Hi,
Have you tried disabling the software firewall on your PC? Do you have the
appropriate services running on your PC? See
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/tshoot-as4x-logs-services.htm for
the list of required services to run ActiveSync 4.x.

Chris,
I went to the link that you provided and follow through and used the setting
to my firewall but no luck. Same error message. I have disable the software
firewall and that did not improve. At one point it works but then afterward
it stops working properly and gave an error message as I mention before. I'm
gonna try different test to see where the issue lie by disabling anti-virus,
firewall and any other software that may interfere. What services did you
mean by having it run?

Hi,
On that web page there is a list of the services that must be running to
sync. If they are not running then you won't be able to sync.

Chris,

Sorry for the delay in repsonding. I was looking around to see what other
file or application that is required to pass through the firewall and I did
allow all those services from the link you provided and no luck. I was able
to do it successfully on my desktop with Norton Internet Security 2006 but on
my laptop which uses Filseclap firewall and was not able to figure out what
it was preventing ActiveSync to communicate. So, I decided to drop that
firewall and use another firewall and that works. I will continue to
investigate what other services or critical file that is required to
communicate between WM5.0 and a PC.

Thanks for the help.
