ActiveSync 4.1 crash after uninstalling an SSP Frank 01-19-2006

After I uninstall an ActiveSync SSP (synchronization service provider),
the ActiveSync Manager shows incorrect information. Then, when syncing,
crashes.

The incorrect information includes Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks
information types that were not enabled. These change to generic icons
without any description text. (I can provide a bitmap of these if needed.)

The ActiveSync Application dialog contains:

Error signature
AppName: wcesmgr.exe
AppVer: 4.1.4841.0
ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180
Offset: 00018fea

Why does ActiveSync crash?

Thanks,

Frank

Hi,
Which SSP are you uninstalling? Is a device connected when you uninstalled
the SSP? You may have to disconnect the device to uninstall it.

Wow, I now have a similar problem but only after the first install and
only with WM 5.0 and ActiveSync 4.0. I tried the same installer with
ActiveSync 4.0 and a PPC 2000 device, and there were no problems. It
only appears to happen when ActiveSync 4.0 is paired with a WM 5.0
device (build 1702).

Problem:

After install, there are 2 to 3 extra phantom applications listed in
ActiveSync 4.0 that only have icons and do not have text descriptions.

When ActiveSync begins to sync, it then displays an error dialog box
and if the ActiveSync UI is open it closes, but ActiveSync itself keeps
running in the system tray. The next time I open the ActiveSync UI,
the phantom applications have disappeared and everything from that
point forward works fine.

I've tried a reboot after installation, but that doesn't resolve the
problem.

I've tried it on multiple machines and with different WM 5.0 devices,
and the same problem exists.

Hi,
Have you tried reinstalling ActiveSync 4.1?

I figured out the problem I was seeing. Microsoft changed some desktop
registry settings for Mobile Windows 5.0 applications, and if any
installer or uninstaller sets some of these changed/moved settings for
a WM 5.0 device, it causes ActiveSync 4.0 and ActiveSync 4.1 to crash
the first time ActiveSync sees these now invalid registry settings.

In particular, does anyone know what the new Windows Mobile 5.0
"desktop" registry settings are to disable the default WM 5.0 PIM
applications: Appointment, Contact, and Task?
