Running Windows XP...

Got a Dell X51v and installed AS 4 and Visual Studio 2005. For various
reasons I need to go back to ActiveSync 3.x -- mostly related to 1) AS 4
being a step backwards in features, and 2) AS 4 being incompatible with
on-device debugging using eVC3 and eVC4. But ignore all that ... here's the
real problem:

Uninstalled Visual Studio 2005 and ActiveSync 4. Re-installed ActiveSync
3.8. Everything seems to work except ActiveSync doesn't display any user
interface. It connects, and if I hover over its icon in the task tray it
says "connected". Right click on the icon and select "Connection Settings"
and I get the expected dialog. But if I right click and select "Open
Microsoft ActiveSync" nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Craig

Unfortunately, the X51v runs WM5, does it not? WM5 requires AS4. Even if you
get AS 4 off your machine and 3.8 back on, it won't work with a WM5 device.
Trade you my X50v for your X51v ;)

Don't push - he may decide to trade. :-)

After installing (and painfully uninstalling) AS4 from my PC I'm pretty
happy
I have X50v not X51...

First, AS3.8 does not require Outlook to be the default mail cleint. AS4
does.
It would not be a big deal if it worked after I set my Outlook 2003 the
default.
It was failing to sync even after I did all the voodoo stuff: "repair"
Outlook,
run system file checker, etc.
moreover, when I disabled sync of any Outlook item types leaving only
Favorites and files, it still demanded to set Outlook the default mail
client
and still failed to sync.
I tried all the tricks listed on Microsoft's and Chris De Herrera's
pages - no luck.

After deinstalling AS4 and installing AS3.8 the latter failed to work
properly
either: I was not able to establish a partnership.
I ended up doing System Restore...

I don't know what brainless idiots suggested to make AS4 behaving that way.
I'm really, really upset, especially in the light of coming Visual
Studio 5, which
includes AS4.

I'm sorry for your experience. It never helps the platform when even savvy
folks have such issues. I actually have been running AS4 since it was
released as a developer preview. I am happily syncing several PPCs and a
couple of Smartphones. I always have used Outlook as the default mail client
so that issue didn't appear for me. My only complaint is the removal of IP
sync with the desktop client.

Needless to say your smart remarks don't address my problem. As I said, AS4
disabled eVC3 and eVC4's ability to communicate with my other devices and I
can't afford to lose that, hence my leap back to 3.8.

I've since solved this problem. The deal is that when you remove AS4 it
leaves a bunch of dll's in place. Then you install 3.8 and it won't install
its files over the "newer" dlls. Unfortunately it's incompatible with the
newer dlls. By examining the install long I was able to find and delete all
the AS4 dlls and then re-install 3.8 so that's working.

To communicate with my WM5 device I bought a new computer. This allows me to
play with ActiveSync 4 and Visual Studio 2005 without risking my
unfortunately already compromised primary development machine.

BTW after I sync'ed my HP HX4700 using AS4 it became toast. Even after a
hard reset, any synchronization attempt results in a locked device that
requires a hard reset.
