 My HTC7500 asks me to install Act Sync 4.5 or later on my PC (which runs win
2k). It seems to me that version 4.2 is the latest yet! A bit futuristic,
eh?

It works fine with 4.2 on my laptop (win xp).

No. Latest version of ActiveSync is 4.5. More here:
