Is Active Sync 4.1 compatible with phones running Windows Mobile 2003 (e.g.,
the Audiovox SMT5600)? The MS site, which is so focused on devices running
Windows Mobile 5.0 is a bit contradictory on this question, and appears to
recommend staying with Active Sync 3.8.

I ask because I have been having a terrible time with over the air
synchronization (when new messages arrive) since my outsourced (1and1.com)
Exchange Server was updraded to Microsoft Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2. I am
hoping there is no incompatability between folks stuck with Windows Mobile
2003 and Service Pack 2.
thx
Alan

ActiveSync 4.1 is only required for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices. It will work
with Windows Mobile 2003 devices, but there's no added features or
improvements. It actually removes remote synchronisation (some call it wi-fi
sync).

If you don't have at least one Windows Mobile 5 device don't bother with
ActiveSync 4 and up.

Not exactly true...if you're running WinXP x64 then you might also want
to use ActiveSync 4.x...ActiveSync 3.x doesn't have x64 shell
integration so you can't use the "Explore" button unless you load the
extention into a 32-bit process (like 32-bit IE under x64).

Also, if you've been using ActiveSync over ethernet kiss it goodbye
under 4.x...MS has removed it due to complaints from corporate IT
folks...some might have thought they would of at least allowed it to be
configurable...but no such luck...;(...

4.1 might not have any new features, it actually sounds like it has less (no
wi-fi sync, which I've never used anyhow), but is it less buggy, more
stable?

Using AS 3.8 with my two WM2003 devices (PPC and Smartphone), I have had a
lot of problems. 3.8 seems pretty buggy to me. I'm wondering if I should
upgrade to 4.1 to get more stable AS performance, less problems.

Anyone reading who had problems when using 3.8, and upgraded to version 4.
Less problems with AS 4?
