Account lock out when accessing computer management remotely hughtwg 09-27-2006

When ever I try to access a specific remote server remotely with
computer management the accounts get locked out. This happens on
numerous accounts. Looking at the security log on the remote server I
get even id 529 unknown username or bad password. However I can login
without a problem using terminal services with the same IDs and
passwords? This server is not in a domain and neither is the
workstation from which I am trying to connect. The server is running
Windows Server 2003 SP1 and the workstation is running XP SP2.

Any ideas on what might be causing this behaviour?

Thanks,
Hugh

We had a workstation and server setup where we had the same user ID on
both but with a different password. This caused the lockout
mentioned.

I've checked with numerous user accounts by logging in to terminal
services so I don't think this is the issue.

thanks,
Hugh

The 529 events are showing the correct account for that machine ?
i.e. username and the remoted-to-machine ?
Have you checked the local policies on the two to verify they are
in agreement on policies affecting the security of RPC communication?

One thing to check for is stored credentials on the client computer that may
have incorrect credentials. Enter control userpasswords2 in the run box
while logged on as the user and go to advanced manage passwords to see if
any are shown that reference the server. Also see if you can access an
administrative share to see what happens. If it still happens try using net
use to connect as in net use * \servername\C$ /u:user password. If that
still fails then it could be an incompatible authentication method as
defined in lan manager authentication level between the computers which is
not used for Remote Desktop.
