 Hi,

I have to say that, coming from the Palm World, I'm more than
upset with what ActiveSync imposes on the users.

I'm not talking about tens of duplicates recreated at each sync
even if you manually delete them both in Outlook and in the device.

I'm not talking about the fact that it launches without control
at all, every 5 minutes or so.

I'm not talking about the fact that it launches immediately as
soon as you modify anything in outlook or on the device itself.

I'm not talking about the fact that it launches each time you
connect the device, even if you don't want to sync but just
charge it.

But one thing that just seems unreal is that you cannot choose
the sync direction!

It seems to be impossible to tell ActiveSync "ok, now, fully
override the device with the current Outlook Desktop content"
or vice versa.

I mean, you try some software that messes up your data on your
device, you certainly DON'T WANT it to be synched with Outlook.
No you want "Outlook -> Device" so the device is back with good
data.

This ActiveSync application is not even basic, it's totally amateur.
How can they come out with a 4.5 version when in the real
world, it looks more than an Alpha 0.2 to me.

Is MicrobeSoft totally unable to only once in a life, do
a nice product? That would mean THINK about a product
specifications, requirements and needs! (I mean... I have to
use Outlook 2007, and this product is also close to a joke
as so many really basic features available in $19 sharewares
are missing! Definitely doesn't look professional at all).
I mean, if I were writing software like they do, without first
thinking about what it's supposed to do, I'll be out of business
for a long time!


I'm always amazed by those guys.

So, any way to sync only "Outlook -> Device" or
"Device -> Outlook" and absolutely avoid
"Outlook <--> Device"?
That would be greatly appreciated.

 Hi Steve,

Sorry, it is not possible to do one-way sync with ActiveSync. You will need
to look at third party solutions like Intellisync -
http://www.sync.com/is_desktop_main.html which gives you greater control
over the information that is synchronized.

I understand your rant (and I agree with most of it).

But there is a simple solution to sync Outlook -> Device.
You just need to delete the partnership in ActiveSync when you are not
connected. The first time you connect your device, you'll be asked to
choose between 3 options : one of them is to replace data on device
with Outlook data.
(be sure to keep a backup of your PST file first)

Another hint : have a look at a freebee ActiveSync Toogle :
http://www.micrologics.co.uk/library/ast/ , you won't be annoyed
anymore when you just want to charge your device.

Yeah, I tried that and lost all the other activesync conduits.
When you create a new partnership, you then have to reinstall all
other software that syncs to the device, in order to add those
conduits...

Activesync used to be more malleable, but I think they were trying to go
for "ease of use" and trimmed lots of control out of it. (While I don't
agree with that direction, I do understand it.)

True, but while I've really screwed things up with third-party apps, they
generally don't mess with the PIM database.

If things are that messed up, you can either delete then recreate the
partnership, or employ a dastardly trick to exploit another long-time
activesync weakness- since Activesync will only sync with thevdefault
folders, I simply create a "temp" subfolder on the desktop and move all
the contacts to it (then do the same for the calendar, etc.)

Now sync with the newly "emptied" Outlook folders, which removes all PIM
data on the device. After the sync, move everything back to the default
folders and the device is rebuilt with "good" data.

It peaked, IMHO, at 3.8, and has been a downhill slide, both in
functionality and stability, since...

Here's where we part company. While I appreciate a good rant as much as
the next guy, MS makes a bunch of good products most of which are pretty
darn user-configurable. Every now and then they make a design decision
that I find questionable, but I'll wager someone else finds it useful,
and they can't please everyone. Yet everytime someone has a nit to pick,
we get to hear how "horrible" every piece of MS software ever written
is/was. ("I can't believe they ROUNDED the corners of the dialog boxes!
Geez, don't these guys understand how to build a UI?!?" etc.)

Like what? Outlook 2K7 seems ok to me, but I've avoided upgrading so far
because many folks are having WinMo sync issues with it, and I use e-mail
and PIM on my mobile more than on my PC.
