Does ASR restore applications such as Antivirus software and any other 3rd
party applications, or does it only restore Account information.

If it doesn't restore the applications, do you reinsstall them before doing
ASR so that it restores their state as well or is my approach here totally
screwy..

The reading I've done doesn't seem to address that directly.

Can anyone recommend an approach to restoring a server that is detroyed to
different hardware, maintaining account and system information, in case
replacement hardware is not available?

thanks
TimeTraveller.

I have not used ASR enough to definitively answer your question and I have
seen conflicting information in documents. I believe it is "supposed" to
restore everything on the system drive partition so if that is where your
applications are it should restore them. Having said that this is something
you should try out on a test computer which also will give you experience in
disaster recovery rather that the first time doing it in a panic. In any
case it probably would not work to install applications to the system drive
partition before restoring an ASR backup. Restoring to different hardware
does complicate disaster recovery though it may work that Plug and Play
detects new hardware or work if you do a repair installation. The link below
is from Microsoft on disaster recovery to different hardware for Active
Directory but may contain helpful information for a non domain controller.

Thanks, Steven, kind of what i was thinking, so it's good to have it
confirmed.
--I hate to blow away a perfectly good server install to test this ;-), but
as you say better with a test machine than production to work the bugs
out.--

You could also try out ASR on any old computer that has XP Pro installed on
it or can be installed on it. It should give you an idea of how it works
specific to most your questions.
