Hello,

I've been sent some map layers in LYR format. Since I don't have ArcGIS I'm
having a bit of trouble with them!

From what I've read on ESRI's site, a lyr isn't data its just a description
of which data to include on a map, so lyr files without the underlying data
is useless. Is that right?

Is there any way of viewing what's in there? I have mapinfo 7.5 and fme
2003.

cheers

Marc,

you are right, a Layer (.lyr) file does not contain any data. It
contains information about how to display the data. You would need the
actual data to be able to display it. If you have it, under mapinfo, you
can use the universal translator to import the data.

You can download ArcExplorer, the free version of ArcGis. You will not
be able to do any analysis, but it is perfect for displaying your data!

Thanks Jean,

Its as I suspected. I've bounced it back to the data provider to send me
shapefiles or other.

cheers
