In the meantime, much more polished versions have been released. Too bad,
because of the inherent hardware / OS restrictions, it still needs to use
speakerphone to record the message, which completely prohibits its usage
under many circumstances.

That's why, if you have an unlimited data plan and a push e-mail account
(or get a free push account from mail2web.com) I recommend Callwave.com's
free Visual Voicemail instead of your carrier's. Any calls you miss are
recorded by Callwave's sErvers and then pushed to your phone as a .wav file
attachment to an e-mail. It gives you, IMHO, the best of both worlds- like
"answering machine" software, the voicemail resides on your device for
instant access without calling in to retrieve it, or for archiving, but
like carrier voicemail it works if your phone is off or out of the service
area.

Give it a try if you have an unlimited dataplan (or have a data "bucket"
that can spare the roughly 1kb/second of recording time the VV .wav files
use.)

You can't do call screening (listen to who's calling and what they
want before deciding whether to answer the call) with voice mail.
