I started learning perl with "The Perl Cookbook" by Tom
Christiansen. It's a great book if you like learning by example.
I know perl pretty well now and still find this book a good
reference to have nearby.

1. Introductory text: Learning Perl (3rd ed.) by Randal Schwartz and
Tom Phoenix (O'Reilly). If you're new to programming as well as Perl:
Elements of Programming with Perl by Andrew Johnson (Manning).

2. In addition to learn.perl.org as mentioned by Sherm, there is a
good Yahoo Groups mailing list: perl-beginner. There are many
focused mailing lists available through either use.perl.org or
nntp.perl.org.

3. comp.lang.perl.modules is a Usenet news group devoted to modular
extensions to the language, such as those found on the Comprehensive
Perl Archive Network (CPAN). So it's not generally an appropriate
forum for newbie-level questions.

4. The name of the language is 'Perl'. The name of its binary
executable in Unix-like environments is 'perl'. 'PERL' is considered
incorrect usage as the name of the language is not a true acronym.
