I spent lot of time investigating this error (fixing and reproducing it
mutiple times). I think I have figured out what causes the error. I am
posting here to see if anyone can show me a workaround.
I have a Windows Server 2000 box as my desktop with terminal services
enabled (in administrative mode). I installed desktop search and indexed my
files. I usually login at the box in Console mode i.e. the usual way. Now
sometimes while leaving office, I lock my computer instead of logging off
....If then I terminal in to the box (of course using the same user account)
...as expected another session is created. Desktop search immediately give me
this error 'We're sorry, but Windows Desktop Search has detected a problem
with your Desktop index and cannot continue. Please reinstall MSN Search
Toolbar here: http://toolbar.msn.com'. After this application stops working
completely even when I am at console (i.e. not terminaled in). I am forced to
reinstall and reindex from scratch.
It seems there is something to do with lock on index file or something like
this.

Is there any workaround? I terminal in regularly..and I cannot trust myself
to log off everyday without fail :(

Any help will be appreciated.

Actually this error happens under any environment on XP/2003 where more user
profiles are present. Can we have the WDS work under each user context as
separate profile?

This is a known issue. It's fairly uncommon across Terminal Servers for
people to log in both on console and remotely. It usually happens as you
discovered when people have a single box they work on remotely.

The workaround is to disable the ability to login to two sessions.

This is a temporary workaround by the way. The next version out has a
fix for this problem. This issue came up very late in the process and we
didn't have time to get the fix in. We're very sorry this bit you.

Thank you. I am downloading the 2.02 version now to test and see.
