Hello All:

This is my first post to this newsgroup, and I would like to begin by
thanking all of the contributors who participate here - the information I
found in this group helped me get my new Qtek 9100 synchronized with my
laptop computer using ActiveSync. All I had to do was reformat the computer
and re-install the OS and all my applications. Couldn't be simpler... :)

Anyway - I have since discovered that ActiveSync 4.1 does not offer the user
the ability to selectively filter which contacts are synchronized to the
handheld device. This is causing me some problems, because I have about
2,000 contacts in my PST file, and I only want 100 of them synchronized to
my PPC.

Does anyone know of a third party synchronization application that gives the
user the ability to filter contacts based on criteria contained in the
'Categories' field within Outlook? The synchronization software that was
bundled in with my previous phone (a SonyEricsson T68) provided this
capability. I don't mind if I have to purchase the synchronization
software.

Many thanks,

Michael

Hi,
Right now I do not know of a 3rd party application that allows you to filter
contacts.

Two possibles that you might be able to utilise:
- You can't synchronise based on categories, but you can view on the device
based on categories.
- ActiveSync only synchronises the top level Contacts folder. If you move
your other contacts to a lower-level folder in Outlook, they wont sync to
the device.

Cheers, Chris

Hello Everyone:

I found the answer to my own question:

There is a product called 'XTND Connect PC' that will do what I want - allow
me to filter my contact file so that only contacts that have a certain entry
in the Category field (in my case, the word 'Phone') get sent to the mobile
device. The software is not free, it costs USD $60 and is available from
this company:
http://www.extendedsystems.com/

It is interesting to note that I found out about this software many years
ago - it came bundled with the last cell phone I bought, which was a Sony
Ericsson T68, back in 2002.

I am quite happy with this software, it allows me to set Boolean criteria
for synchronization of email, contacts, notes, tasks, and so forth. It's
not perfect, but it seems to be the best there is out there. It works with
ActiveSync.

A word to anyone who might plan to try this out (it is available for
purchase with a 30 day money back promise): Before you install it, go to
the settings for Microsoft Active Sync and DISABLE synchronization of the
Outlook items (mail, contacts, tasks, etc.) within ActiveSync. If you don't
do this, you will get both applications synchronizing the same Outlook
files, and that is a disaster.

Although the program is pretty good, I suggest that you make a backup of the
Outlook .pst file (or .ost, if you are working off a server) on your laptop
before you install it. That way, if you make an error during installation
and configuration, you can always revert back to the Outlook file you had
before.
