Hello,

I am currently doing some research on 3D GIS file formats. I need to
store a quite large amount of data which is going to be used in a
OpenGL based realtime 3D renderer. What I have is a already
triangulated Digital Landscape Model generated from ATKIS and elevation
data. What I need is a file format which allows the storage of the 3D
mesh for each landscape object as well as meta information like object
type (which could be forest area, industrial are, roads etc), bounding
volumes, texture coordinates etc., i.e. all the stuff which is needed
for 3D graphics. Do such file formats exist or is it better to develope
my own format which suits all the requirements?

Stefan

Stefan -

Check out CityGML (www.citygml.org). There may be much useful
information there as CityGML is designed to enable interoperable
interchange of 3D urban models (buildings, terrain, building
components, etc)

Regards

Carl

If CityGL is insufficient, GML can handle at least 3 dimensional
objects. Whether there is any software that will handle the result is
moot!
