301 redirect question Jez 04-07-2008

I am reworking an old site of mine and need to update the linking structure.

How many redirects is it safe to apply (singular pages to singular
pages, that is). I seem to remember that it's only practical to redirect
a certain amount. Is this correct?

Anyone had any bad experiences with this sort of thing?

Thanks,

Jez.

Not that I know. But why do you want to update the linking structure?

Hi John,

The site is old and it sprawls a bit - it's been cobbled together over
the years. Lots of old pages that I no longer want and lots of new also.
Plus I have some pages that really should be mini sites within the
larger site and I would like to redirect those pages to a separate
folder just for ease of use and navigation - plus if they ever warrant
being a site alone then it's easier to split away from the main.

So you don't see any problem with doing the 301's?

Thanks,

Jez.

Heh, I hear you :-D

Yeah, I have that with my site as well. But I leave them, because they
still get visitors. Maybe I will update/extend the content one day in the
future, but I try to avoid removing pages.

In a way, for navigation it doesn't matter much, but I hear you on the
separate folder part :-)

Nope. Google recommends to use 301 for just this. I've done a lot of 301's
on my site to fix a mistake I made ages ago, and I didn't notice any
negative side effect.

I don't myself. I'll forgive you if you don't see that as being a
sound endorsement of the practice though :-)
