Yeah, I have that with my site as well. But I leave them, because they
still get visitors. Maybe I will update/extend the content one day in the
future, but I try to avoid removing pages.

In a way, for navigation it doesn't matter much, but I hear you on the
separate folder part :-)

Nope. Google recommends to use 301 for just this. I've done a lot of 301's
on my site to fix a mistake I made ages ago, and I didn't notice any
negative side effect.
