I have a Dell Axim x50v Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 2003 Second
Edition. It seems flawlessly with my desktop using ActiveSync 3.8.

I just purchased a Windows Smartphone (Cingular 2125) running Windows
Mobile 5.0, which according to Microsoft requires ActiveSync 4.x.

I know ActiveSync normally will sync multiple devices with one PC, but
what happens in my case? Can I run two versions of ActiveSync on the
same PC? If I do this will everything sync properly?

Some expert advice would be highly appreciated!

Hi,
ActiveSync 4.x replaces ActiveSync 3.x when you install it. You can still
sync with your x50v however you will lose the option to sync via the network
(Wi-Fi or Ethernet).

Thanks Chris. You seem to have tremendous expertise in this area.
With respect to wi-fi, I've heard that ActiveSync 4.1also breaks
existing wi-fi connections (if they use WPA encryption). Here's my
setup:

Desktop (primary machine) running WindowsXP Pro. Currently I sync my
Axim x50v (Pocket PC 2003 SE) with this machine using ActiveSync 3.8.
The desktop has a direct (ethernet) connection to the network.

Laptop running WindowsXP Pro. I often leave this machine online via
wi-fi (using WPA) while at home. Not presently syncing to/from this
machine.

I would like to begin syncing my new Smartphone (Windows Mobile 5) with
the desktop. This will require me to install ActiveSync 4.1.

QUESTION: If I replace ActiveSync 3.8 with 4.1 on the desktop, will it
knock my laptop offline each time I sync on the desktop machine?

Hi!

In general, what you want does not work; AS 4.* replaces AS 3.8.

As I didn't want that, I had to walk the way of installing virtual machines
software so now both versions reside on my PC.

Hi, I have a follow up question regarding this topic. Is it possible to
sync two devices at once? Or, is it possible to have two device
connected at once?

Thanks
