I have some old laptop drives that I want to get some files off of. I
purchased a 2.5 to 3.5 drive adapter from CompUSA.
I am using an older PC that has a 40pin IDE cable coming off of the second
IDE port.

The drive can not be seen in bios, and it appears to not even spin up.

The connector on the hard drive is what I call a knuckle connection. It
appears to wrap around a male plug in the laptop. I removed that cable where
it connects to the drive, then attach the connector to the male pins there.

There are four pins left to the side, I believe I need to use them as a
master slave selectors.

Anyone have any luck with these adapters?

Config details please ? What do you have as the primary drive(s) ? Is
the laptop drive Fat32 ? NTFS ?
Are you sure Pin 1 is correct and drive is not upside-down ?
It's this connector , right ? : I use one often.

Mine is keyed so that can't use it the wrong way, but if yours isn't ...
With the red+black wires to the left and the writing " 2.5" HDD adapter"
so that you can read it, pin 1 is on the top-right. (opposite the
wires). Note the bottom comment in the review: "You also need to
make sure you connect most laptop hard drives as a master, unless you
know how to change the jumper to slave. "

For the moment, hook it up as the only drive - off the PRIMARY master
IDE connection - NOT the secondary. Check the BIOS - NOW do you see the
drive ?

I am attaching to an old P2 IBM PC. First tried on second IDE connection
with nothing else. Tried master slave pins all four ways. Even without the
jumper. Then disconnected the primary drive and still get the same response.
Actually OS/2 on first drive, and Win95 on the other. Can see neither drive.
I have a newer PC that had the 80pin IDE cable, and thought I would try it
on that one too.

The connector has a number 1 on it, the drive too.

Bill,
Can you explain this ... You stated : >" Actually OS/2 on first drive,
and Win95 on the other. Can see neither drive. "
I read that as meaning : not only can't you see the 2.5 in drive, you
can't see ANY drive ? Is that right ? If so, forget the 2.5 drive as
it's a bigger problem than that. This PC - was it working prior to
messing with the 2.5" drive ? Get it to see SOME 3.5" drive as primary
master in the BIOS first. Maybe the 2.5" connector is bad (shorting some
pins) and blew out the IDE channels ? Try a new IDE cable. Try another
PC - can you see the drive there ? I'd work on getting the PC working
without the 2.5" drive for now. Put a 3.5" drive on the primary and one
on the secondary. Check BIOS - does it see them both ? If so, try each
as primary - does each boot ? etc until you know what you've got for
working components.

The two 2.5" drives I want to get data off of are OS/2, and Win95.
I can see my "C" drive, (3.5"). I disconnected the "C" drive, and put either
2.5" drives on the primary with the same result as the secondary IDE
connection.

I have not tried the other PC yet.
