I want to clone my 2.5" Dell E1505 Laptop SATA drive to a larger
drive. Since
the laptop has only one drive connection, can I put the two 2.5"
drives in a desktop
computer and do the cloning there? That is, are the SATA data/power
cables
the same and are 2.5" laptop drives compatible with a desktop?

Yep, SATA laptop drives use the same connectors for both power and
data as SATA desktop drives.

At least every one I've ever seen does. Had to CYA there. :-)

Alternatively, there are USB to SATA adaptors as well as Cardbus (PCMCIA) to
SATA cards.

OR 2.5" SATA external caddies. that i think is the easiest option.
They generally require 2 USB ports or 1 usb and 1 power port. When
plugged in it will be like a plug n play drive.

Yes, they are the same, and you can do that.
