Hi, just wondered what people's take on monitors is. I've recently
bought an Dell Inspiron 1300
with 14" monitor. Is it really worth the extra for 15"?
Cheers, Ed.

Since the display is what you will be spending hours staring at, it makes
sense to buy as much of it as you can afford. As far as I'm concerned a 14"
laptop display is too small.

Conversely, I'm a road warrior and feel that a 15" display is too large to
be lugging around the globe.
Resolution is more important than display size anyway. Some, like me, feel
that SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) on a 14" display is perfect, while others would
prefer a 15" display at that resolution due to vision problems, or an XGA
(1024 x 768) display in 14".
No one can make this decision for anyone else in this matter. Ideally one
needs to go someplace where various displays can be seen and played with a
bit in order to find the best "fit".

That's what I was going to say. Next time you fly, wait until the guy
in front of you decides to recline his seat and crunches your screen
down, then tell me if bigger is always better.
When I use my laptop at my desk, I have a docking station with a 21" LCD
anyways so it doesn't matter. And when I use the built-in screen, it's
usually in my lap, which is a relatively close viewing distance. And
unlike smaller (12") laptops, 14" is enough to accomodate a normal sized
keyboard. So it's a good size IMHO.

I love my 12" wide screen (Toshiba Portege 300M). The overall weight of the
notebook is also so much lighter than a 14", that it really makes a huge
difference when using is for long periods on your lap. It also has a
ultra-low voltage processor which does not emit as much heat as a bigger
machine.
