I'm running windows XP home with auto updates enabled. From switch on, it
now takes over ten minutes before the POST checks kick in.

Anyone any thoughts on how to speed things up???

If it is taking 10 minutes before the POST even start the bootup, it doesn't
have anything to do with Windows, that's all hardware. The OS isn't involved
until it says "Loading Windows" (or something to that effect.

Have you gone through your BIOS/Setup, to see if it is doing some type of
system/memory check before booting? That seems unlikely, since that would
all occur after POST, in fact, I think the only thing that occurs before
POST is the power supply levels the voltages and send a PowerGood signal to
the MB.

Do you have all the Windows updates and their not downloading updates to your
computer?

Use your Disk Cleanup, Disk Fefragmenter, turn off Startup programs you
don't need to Startup Windows.

Thanks for help so far. The delay is definately before the beep on the POST
tests.

Redwood - I am pretty confident I have all the updates in that i go to the
update page and get it to scan my computer for required updates. I also run
defrag & system cleanup weekly, so they are not able to make any difference.
How do I turn off "startup" programs??

Thanks for your help.

I would suggest ignoring Redwood's advice. It is clear that your
trouble is in the BIOS or hardware, as Jaime said.
